Other deductions

Costs of managing your tax affairs.

Paying to have your tax done right is itself deductible. So are a handful of other admin costs most people don't think to claim. Small line items, but they add up — especially year after year.

What's typically claimable

  • Fees paid to a registered tax agent (like Night Tax) for preparing and lodging your return
  • The cost of tax reference books and software you use to manage your tax
  • Certain interest charged by the ATO on tax debts
  • Reasonable travel to see your tax agent
  • Litigation costs for disputing tax assessments (where allowable)

What's not claimable

  • Fines and general interest for late lodgement or payment (outside the specific allowable categories)
  • The tax you pay itself
  • Costs of preparing tax returns for other people

Timing matters

You claim these costs in the year you actually pay them. If you paid your Night Tax fee in the current financial year — even if the fee was for last year's return — that's the year you claim it in.

Pay from refund still counts

If you use Night Tax's Pay from Refund option, the fee is deducted from your refund in the year you lodge — and it's claimable in that year.

How Night Tax captures it automatically

You don't need to remember to add Night Tax's fee. When your return is prepared, the AI automatically includes the deductible portion of your tax management costs in the right label, and your registered tax agent reviews the whole return before lodgement.
